Rolling hills, green fescue pastures, rich meadows alongside meandering rivers and streams, and the mix of pine and hardwood forests makes Northeast Georgia a great place to raise cattle. Hidden in this part of the state is Wahachee Creek Farms. Wahachee Creek is out side of Elberton, Georgia on Highway 72. Elberton is known as the Granite City due to the amount of granite that is mined for buildings, monuments, and many other items.
When I arrived at Wahachee Creek Farms, I was greeted by Ray Bradshaw, farm manager. Painting, electrical work, replacement of fencing, and a new barn were underway. Also, improvements were being made to the existing barns, and other facilities. The Juniors are going to be well pleased with the boarding and show-ring facilities that will be provided.
Wahachee Creek has been in operation under Ray Bradshaw and Skeet McGowan’s supervision for six years. Along with Polled Hereford cattle, registered cutting horses are also raised and trained on the farm.
Skeet is not much for titles, but according to him, his position is the farm general manager. Skeet was born in Wadley, Georgia, and lived on Charles Smith’s farm. After leaving Wadley at age ten, he lived in Conyers. The McGowan family presently makes their home in Greene County.
The cow herd is made up primarily of Victor bred cattle as a base. Over the past six years cattle have been purchased from some of the top herds in the Southeast, with many of these cattle being the top selling lots at production sales.
Wahachee Creek is using bulls like SSF WCF Keyman 006 and Mohican Klyde 061K as out cross sires. With the influence of these genetics on Victor cattle, they are producing some exciting results. Along with the out cross bulls, Victor genetics such as CES WCF Victor 629 X62 and CES WCF Victor R270 X143 are being utilized.
This fall, Wahachee Creek Farms will have its first production sale, consisting of sixty lots . With Georgia Field Day and their production sale, 2002 is going to be an eventful year for Wahachee Creek. Bring the family June 14-15, 2002 to Wahachee Creek Farms in Elberton, Georgia for a fun-filled weekend of show cattle, good food, and good friends.
See you at Wahachee Creek Farms!
