In the spring of 1968, as the result of discussions among several of the Georgia Polled Hereford Breeders, R. L. Swearingen, Jr. set up a meeting for May, 18, 1968, at the Holiday Inn in Perry, Georgia. Twenty-four breeders attended and it was decided to reorganize the Georgia Polled Hereford Association (GPHA) and the following directors were elected:

R.L. Swearingen, Jr. was elected Secretary and temporary Chairman of the Board of Directors until the first membership meeting.

At the first membership meeting at The Rock on July 31, 1968, J.E. Strickland, Jr. was elected President. Sam Sells, Jr. was elected vice President and R.L. Swearingen, Jr. Secretary-Treasurer. Mr. Swearingen served as Secretary-Treasurer until August 1984. Keene Murphey served as Secretary-Treasurer from 1984 until 1986. Dr. Frank Thomas became Secretary-Treasurer in June 1986. Dr. Thomas served in this position until April 2007.

In June 2001, as a result of the merging of the National Polled Hereford Association and American Hereford Association, the membership voted to change the name from the Georgia Polled Hereford Association (GPHA) to the Georgia Hereford Association (GHA). The name became effective on October 26, 2001.

The GHA sponsors one or more female or mixed sales annually.
The GHA jointly sponsors with AHA a live demostration at the Sunbelt Expo each fall in Moultrie Georgia. Other information booths are also manned at other cattle events such as the annual Georgia Cattlemen's Convention and the Georgia Cattlemen's Beef Expo in Perry Georgia.
The GHA publishes a Directory promoting Georgia Hereford Breeders every two years.
The GHA publishes a quarterly newsletter to keep the membership abreast of happenings in the Hereford Breed.
Breeders residing in other states are eligible to join as associate members.

Georgia also boasts a strong Junior program in the Georgia Junior Hereford Association and a strong Women's support program in the Georgia Poll-ettes.
